Serendipity!
My Rothko-Mas fusion captures the surprise creation of YInMn Blue, the world’s first new blue pigment in over 200 years. Each block represents one of three oxidized rare-earth elements that comprise it: Yttrium, Indium, and Manganese. A fiery underlayer and incandescent overlayer represent the 2350° F temperature necessary to trigger the chemical reaction resulting in serendipitous bursts of blue, featured here in authentic YInMn Blue pigmented paint.
It is with humble gratitude and reverence for their work that I dedicate this piece to Dr. Mas Subramanian and his team of researchers at Oregon State University. Our world is bluer because of you.
